Curiosity is at the Heart of Natural Learning

My grandson has been showing some interest in fishing lately.  He has been asking a lot of questions about it, but has never had the experience of casting a pole.

Gratefully our newest son-in-law, Jared, is an avid fisherman – so of course the two of them had a lot to talk about last Saturday as we headed for the lake. What an opportunity to nurture Mason’s curiosity. You see curiosity is at the heart of Natural Learning – so we want to seize the moment and let them learn!

I was able to do some Observation.  What did I observe?  Mason learned a lot about bait, and sinkers and bubbles and how quickly your line can get caught in just about anything! He got a peek inside a very nice tackle box.  He got the chance to continue to ask all kinds of questions about fishing, AND to receive the answers.

He learned patience – a trait that is hard to acquire.  In any other setting he would never have chosen to sit and watch and wait for such lengths of time.  But while fishing we can slow the pace, enjoy visiting with one another and still keep one eye on the line. He wasn’t disappointed when he didn’t catch a fish, but was eager to try again.

Little brother was curious about bugs, dirt and how close he could get to the water before the rest of us ran after him.  He loved every minute of it too.

Let curiosity guide your learning today.
