Nature Study

Happy days are here again!  We’ve seen the sunshine for several days in a row, and temperatures actually broke 50 degrees.  This sends my thoughts to the possibility of Spring, which in turn gets me excited about planning some excursions with our cooperative.

This calls for pulling out some of my favorite books on the subject of Nature Study.  The first one would be the Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady It’s full of beautiful artwork by Edith Holden and her observations throughout the year. It has inspired more than one of my students to take up their notebook and pencil and spend a day in the canyon.

Another favorite is Wild Days by Karen Skidmore Rackliffe.  This mom has an engaging way of telling her family story as it pertains to days spent in the outdoors.

I’ll mention one more, Handbook of Nature Study, by Anna Botsford Comstock. Any topic pertaining to nature can be found in this book with engaging lessons from a true naturalist to go with it.

My hope for each of us today is to walk barefoot in the grass and bask in the sunshine if only for a few minutes!
